WATCH | ‘Leaked’ assault video raises questions over Strand incident

A video circulating on social media, which shows a woman being assaulted in Strand, has raised questions.

The “leaked” CCTV footage shows a metallic blue stationery vehicle, with its left rear door open. A man approaches the vehicle and what appears to be a struggle between people ensues. The man, standing outside, pulls a woman from the vehicle before getting in on the driver’s side and driving away.

Captions accompanying the video suggest the incident at the intersection of Broadway Boulevard and Main Road in Strand took place on Tuesday 16 June. According to an eyewitness account included in the captions, a female passenger in the front seat allegedly attacked the victim in the back seat before a man dragged her from the vehicle.

The captions further claim that emergency services attended to the victim at the scene before she was transported to hospital for medical treatment. The police confirmed they are investigating the matter. It is also stated that no arrests have been made, with authorities calling on anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact their nearest police station.

The captions further claim the victim’s condition is not known.

However, when Nova News approached the Western Cape police for comment, Constable Ndakhe Gwala said neither Strand nor Lwandle police stations had a record of the incident.

Strand Patrol Helderberg Neighbourhood Watch subsequently confirmed that the video is linked to an incident that occurred around 13:00 on Saturday 13 June. Watch chairperson KC Gericke says members responded to a radio call about a woman laying in the parking lot of a car dealership in Main Road, Strand. Upon arrival, they apparently found a 22-year-old woman, whose identity remains unknown, with a wound to her head.

Gericke says the woman refused to open a case and was transported to a nearby hospital, adding that the video originated from an internal communication platform. He said no further investigation or action could be taken, as no case was registered.
