Voortrekker hit the ground running in their season opener against HTS Louis Botha.

When you score 27 unanswered points in your season opener, you’re sending a message. Bethlehem Voortrekker did exactly that on Saturday 28 February, dismantling HTS Louis Botha with a dominant display that showcased power, precision and relentless intensity.

The Trekkers never gave their visitors a sniff. From the opening whistle, Voortrekker raced to a 12-0 lead with powerful and intelligent running that carved through the Louis Botha defence at will. By halftime, the writing was on the wall.

“We are happy with our first hit out. It was a good game to kick off the season,” said Justin Taylor, head of rugby at Voortrekker.

But happiness doesn’t quite capture the clinical nature of Voortrekker’s performance. The men from Bethlehem kept the ball in hand superbly and dominated at the breakdowns, never allowing Louis Botha to build any momentum or settle into their structures.

Credit where credit’s due, though, Louis Botha’s scramble defence held the tide back at crucial moments. When gaps appeared and seemed certain to turn into tries, desperate tackles and smart positioning kept the scoreline from becoming embarrassing.

The second half picked up where the first left off. From the opening kick-off, Voortrekker continued their onslaught. An early maul try showcased their physical dominance on the day, with the pack driving through Louis Botha’s resistance like a freight train.

When the game opened up and became looser, Louis Botha looked more dangerous with ball in hand. But Voortrekker’s discipline and structure never wavered. They absorbed any brief pressure and kept their shape throughout, demonstrating the hallmarks of a well-drilled side.

“Our structures are in place. I think the players just need more time on the field. You only get properly match fit by the third game, but in general things are looking good for the start of the season. We are happy,” Taylor said.

The final quarter felt like a procession. Voortrekker maintained their pace and intensity, running in two more tries to close out a comprehensive 27-0 victory. The nil on the scoreboard for Louis Botha tells the story: Voortrekker’s defence was as solid as their attack was potent.

The match was played as part of the Hester van der Walt Sportsday, hosted by President Steyn. On the day, Bultfontein beat the hosts President Steyn 17-10.
