Welkom was well represented at the 99th Comrades Marathon. The route, which started at Durban City Hall and finished at the Scottsville Racecourse in Pietermaritzburg, measured 85,777 km, making it the shortest Comrades “up run” in recent history.

Three Welkom runners received Green Numbers this year; recognition given by the Comrades marathon association to athletes who have finished ten Comrades.

There were 35 runners from Welkom that took part, and of whom 32 finished. The fastest finish amongst the welkom runners was attributed to Nkhetheni Masupa (07:18:11). Green numbers were awarded to Masupa, Nthabisen Tunte and Zolani Nyuliwe.
