WELKOM – The 4 Feral Cats Rescue Organisation, a local cat rescue organisation, is appealing to the Welkom community for assistance as an increasing number of cats in need places growing pressure on its food supplies and veterinary funds.

4 Feral Cats Rescue Organisation does more than care for feral cats.

The group also assists families who are struggling to feed their pets, helps sick cats access veterinary treatment and contributes towards veterinary costs when necessary.

The organisation also runs a trap, neuter or spay and release programme aimed at controlling the feral cat population humanely.

According to the organisation, it currently assists between 300 and 350 cats a month, including about 140 cats living at a cattery on a farm in Hennenman.

Other cats are cared for by foster families and volunteers, while additional feeding stations provide food for feral cats in the community.

The organisation is also currently helping two families with cat and dog food so they can continue caring for their pets.

The growing demand has left 4 Feral Cats facing mounting food and veterinary costs.

“We are seeing a heartbreaking influx of cats, and we just want to be able to give every cat a second chance at a happy life,” Louis Kegan of the organisation said.

Community members can support the initiative in several ways.

Adoption provides a cat with a permanent home, while fostering gives cats and kittens a safe temporary home while they wait for their forever families. Volunteers can also assist with bottle-feeding kittens.

Financial donations are particularly important to help cover veterinary bills, including treatment for sick animals and sterilisation before cats are released.

The organisation also welcomes donations of cat food, kitten milk, blankets and towels to help with its daily operations.

4 Feral Cats is a non-profit organisation and can issue a Section 18A certificate for qualifying donations for tax purposes.

The organisation is also planning a major fundraising event towards the end of September, with details to be announced.

In addition, a raffle will be held, with the prize being a two-night stay for two people at Bosrand Glamping in Ventersburg.
