VIRGINIA – A 45-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman died when a Renault Kwid was involved in a collision with two other vehicles at an intersection near Virginia in the Free State on Sunday.
Virginia police are investigating a case of culpable homicide after two people were killed in a three-vehicle collision on Sunday, 18 October.
The crash involved a Mahindra bakkie, a Renault Kwid and a Toyota Starlet at the intersection of the R730 and ZR Mahabane Road near Virginia.
According to a media statement issued by the Free State police on Monday, 19 October, officers were summoned to the scene at approximately 14:30.
Both occupants of the white Renault Kwid, a 45-year-old male driver and his 19-year-old female passenger, were declared dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.
Two male occupants of the Mahindra sustained serious injuries and were transported to hospital for medical treatment.
The two women travelling in the Toyota Starlet escaped without injuries, according to police.
Road closure and emergency response
Emergency services, rescue teams and law enforcement officers attended the scene.
Earlier reports indicated that two other survivors had been assessed and monitored at the scene, while two injured people were transported to RH Matjhabeng Hospital by emergency medical service provider 1Life911. The police statement, however, described the two Mahindra occupants’ injuries as serious.
The road was temporarily closed to allow the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) to conduct its duties and for recovery operations.
Motorists travelling between Welkom, Virginia and Theunissen were advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes while emergency and law enforcement personnel worked at the scene.
Police investigate fatal collision
Police confirmed that the circumstances leading to the collision remain unclear and are the subject of an ongoing investigation.
A case of culpable homicide has been registered at Virginia police station for further investigation.
No further details about the cause of the collision have been released.
