In a landmark case highlighting forensic science’s power, a 34-year-old rapist has been successfully convicted and sentenced to ten years in prison due to crucial DNA evidence linking him to a brutal sexual assault.

Kenneth Motaung was found guilty of raping a 23-year-old woman in July 2022, near Senekal. The Serial and Electronic Crime Investigation (Seci) unit played a pivotal role in solving this case. The investigation team’s success included crime scene reconstruction and witness tracing.

A critical breakthrough came through advanced forensic techniques. DNA evidence collected from the crime scene was scientifically matched to Motaung, who was already incarcerated in Kroonstad Prison for unrelated murder and rape charges.

A second DNA sample definitively confirmed his identity as the Senekal rape suspect.
