WELKOM – The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) has urged eligible South Africans to donate blood as national stocks fall to just 3.9 days’ cover, below the organisation’s minimum target of five days.

SANBS needs approximately 3,500 units of blood daily to meet patient demand, but current collections are falling short, placing pressure on the country’s blood supply ahead of the festive season.

Blood stocks fall below critical target

Some regions are experiencing even greater shortages, with stocks falling below three days’ cover.

The declining reserves raise concerns about the availability of blood during a period when hospitals continue to rely on transfusions for life-saving surgery, childbirth complications, cancer treatment and emergency medical care.

Group O blood vital in emergencies

Group O blood is particularly important in emergencies, as it can be used when there is limited time to establish a patient’s blood group before a transfusion is required.

Monique Schreiner, senior manager of donor relations at SANBS, said public support was urgently needed to rebuild stocks before the festive season.

“The current blood supply is under significant pressure, and we need the public’s support to rebuild stocks ahead of the festive season,” she said.

SANBS calls on eligible donors to act

Schreiner appealed to regular donors, those who had not donated for some time and eligible South Africans who had never donated blood to come forward.

“Every donation counts and can help save lives,” she said.

SANBS is encouraging eligible donors to make blood donation a priority rather than postponing it until later in the year.

Donations made now can help ensure that sufficient blood is available for patients throughout the festive season.

How to donate blood

Members of the public can contact SANBS on 0800 11 90 31 or visit www.sanbs.org.za to find their nearest donor centre or mobile blood drive.
