The Free State Department of Health has conducted 102 cataract surgeries at the Bongani Regional Hospital in Welkom as part of its plan to reduce surgical backlogs across the province.

The marathon, held from 26 to 29 June, follows a similar operation at the Boitumelo Hospital in Kroonstad from 29 to 31 May, where more than 100 patients received surgery. Combined, more than 200 patients have benefited from the sight-restoring procedures since the end of May.

“Twenty-one patients were deferred due to changes in their health status and will be rescheduled once medically fit. All deferred patients received appropriate treatment,” says Mondli Mvambi, spokesperson for the Free State Health Department.

The initiative delivers on commitments made by Monyatso Mahlatsi, MEC for Health, during the Budget Vote Speech on 7 May 2026 in Bethulie.

“Our teams are restoring sight, dignity and the ability to live productive lives. Thank you to every clinician, nurse, anaesthetist, optometrist and support staff member who made these marathons possible,” Mahlatsi said.

All patients undergo clinical screening to ensure they are ready for surgery. Those deferred are prioritised for medical optimisation before being returned to the surgical list.

The department will continue implementing surgical marathons and will communicate upcoming dates through official channels. Patients on waiting lists are advised to keep their contact details up to date at local clinics and to adhere to treatment for existing conditions to remain surgery-ready.
