The announcement of the removal of non-performing mayors in the Free State is a long-overdue and commendable step toward restoring dignity, accountability, and effective governance in our municipalities. For far too long, communities have endured failing service delivery, financial mismanagement, and a lack of responsive leadership.

The intervention, reportedly guided by Pres. Cyril Ramaphosa, signals a renewed commitment to addressing the deep-rooted challenges facing local government. It affirms that poor performance and neglect of duty will no longer be tolerated, regardless of position or political affiliation.

Residents across the province have grown weary of empty promises, while basic services continue to deteriorate. Water shortages, collapsing infrastructure, and rising unemployment have become the daily reality for many. The removal of these mayors offers a glimmer of hope that a new chapter – one defined by accountability, competence, and service to the people – can begin.

However, this action must not end with removals alone. It should be followed by the appointment of capable, ethical, and service-driven leaders who are committed to rebuilding trust and delivering tangible results. Communities deserve leadership that listens, acts, and delivers.

The people of the Free State have waited long enough. This moment must mark the beginning of meaningful change, not just a temporary response to public pressure.
