Pitso Mereko, provincial coordinator for the Safer South Africa Foundation, represented South Africa at the Partnerships for Prevention of Gender-based Violence in Southern Africa (PfP) Social Innovation Lab regional workshop. The workshop was hosted by the international humanitarian agency, the Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammernabeit (GIZ) GmbH, and was held at the Birchwood Hotel from 22 to 24 May. One of the outcomes of the workshop was GIZ offering to sponsor an express communities and justice programme for a rural school as a measure to reduce the number of learners dropping out due to teenage pregnancy and gender-based violence (GBV) crimes. Mereko says GBV has no place in this world. “Thanks to initiatives and international support such as this, we are steadily making a difference in tackling it one starfish at a time (#1starfish@atime),” says Mereko.
