A concerned employee, Lejweleputswa Development Agency:
I am writing to bring to public attention a matter of serious concern involving the Lejweleputswa Development Agency, a district municipal entity in the Free State.
I am an employee of the agency. Staff have not been paid their salaries for five months, despite remaining employed and expected to continue reporting for duty until the audit was finished.
The Lejweleputswa District Council approved an operational budget of zero for the agency, after which salary payments ceased.
At the same time, employees have been informed of an intended liquidation of the agency, yet no formal liquidation process has commenced, and no lawful termination of employment has taken place.
As a result, employees remain without income, clarity or relief, while continuing to suffer severe financial hardship.
The decision to approve a zero budget while employees remain appointed raised serious questions of governance, accountability, and fairness, particularly in a district already facing significant socio-economic challenges.
Employees have sought clarity and intervention through formal channels, but the situation remains unresolved.
The ongoing non-payment of salaries has caused significant personal distress and uncertainty for affected staff and their families.
I am raising this matter in the public interest and request that my identity be protected due to fear of victimisation.
I trust that your publication will consider highlighting this matter to ensure transparency, accountability, and urgent intervention.
■ Vista approached the Lejweleputswa municipal manager, Lesley Motlatsi Makhetha, for comment. At the time of going to press he has not responded. The excutive mayor is Veronica Ntakumbana.
