Lejweleputswa chess players returned from the Free State Top Schools Provincial Finals with three provincial titles and two additional podium finishes.
More than 200 young chess players gathered in Bloemfontein on 5 September for the Free State Top Schools Provincial Finals, with schools from Lejweleputswa and Mangaung Metro competing across age groups ranging from U10 to U20.
Lejweleputswa was represented by learners from Loskuil Primary School, Trio Primary School, Naudeville Primary, Welkom Volkskool, Goudveld-Hoërskool, Welkom-Gimnasium, St Andrews School in Welkom, and the Lejweleputswa Legends Chess Academy.

The district enjoyed a successful tournament, securing three provincial titles.
The Lejweleputswa Legends Chess Academy claimed the U12 girls’ and U12 mixed titles, while St Andrews School secured the U18 boys’ provincial championship.
Lejweleputswa Legends Chess Academy also recorded two further podium finishes. Its U12 boys’ team finished second, while the U10 girls’ team secured third place.
The strong performances highlighted the depth of chess talent emerging from the Lejweleputswa district, with players competing against some of the province’s strongest school-based chess teams.
