The unit was busy with crime combating in Kutloanong and Odendaalsrus when they were requested to intervene after a gang fight was reported in K9 Section.

On 20 May, at about 11:45, the unit observed a large group of between 30 to 40 young men chasing each other with different kinds of dangerous weapons.

The situation was approached tactically and eight arrests were made, with the dangerous weapons seized. Alleged gangsters belonging to the groups known as Born to Kill, International Big Family, Out of Order, and Al Qaeda were identified among the arrested suspects.

“The residents of K9 Section are thankful for the intervention of the Welkom Anti-Gang unit members for making those arrests. The residents, and their children, live in fear,” says Capt. Stephen Thakeng, media liaison officer for the police in Lejweleputswa.

The suspects, aged between 19 and 33 years, are facing charges of public violence, and possession of dangerous weapons. The suspects have appeared in the Odendaalsrus Magistrates’ Court.
