In a moment that will be etched in the memories of the Hlabahlaba family forever, Kelebohile Hlabahlaba has returned home to a hero’s welcome on Friday 27 February after completing an epic cycle challenge that has captured the hearts of the community.

The 27-year-old cyclist, son of Modise Hlabahlaba and Mankwane Hlabahlaba, has broken the unsupported cycling world record, raising funds for Nalane Groceries, an initiative aimed at creating 10 000 jobs for youth.

Kelebohile cycled through five countries, including South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique, and Botswana, covering a staggering distance of over 2 000km.

As he rode into town, Kelebohile was met with a sea of smiling faces, cheers, and tears of joy from family, friends, and community leaders.

“We are so proud of you, Kelebohile!” his mom, Mankwane Hlabahlaba, exclaimed.

Edwin Mokoena, communications trainee at the Lejweleputswa District Municipality, says Kelebohile took a moment to share his incredible journey with the crowd, recounting tales of perseverance, determination, and the kindness of strangers. He spoke of the breathtaking landscapes, the challenging terrain, and the unwavering support he received along the way.

The cyclist was warmly welcomed by Cllr Veronica Ntakumbana, executive mayor of the Lejweleputswa District Municipality, and Cllr Dimakatsi Modise, mayor of the Masilonyana Local Municipality, who praised his dedication to uplifting the youth.

Sinde Nhlapo, director of Mikaele Tactical and VIP Security, also played a significant role in Kelebohile’s mission, donating R50 000 to support his cause.

“This is just the beginning,” Kelebohile said.

“We’re going to make a real difference in the lives of our youth, and we’re going to do it together.”

The community is rallying behind Kelebohile, and his initiative is getting massive support. Tsholo Leokaoke of Lesedi FM Radio is also amplifying his mission, spreading the word about Nalane Groceries and its goals.

The people of Theunissen and beyond are eager to see what is next for this remarkable young man.
