The days of our youth – what a season of life to be alive in! King Solomon in Ecclesiastes 11:9 (NLT) puts it in this exiting way:
“Young people, it’s wonderful to be young! Enjoy every minute of it. Do everything you want to do; take it all in. But remember that you must give an account to God for everything you do.”
Being young really is an open invitation to explore and be curious about life. There is enough energy and everything is bright and amazing. So much to take in…
But Solomon carries on in Ecc. 12:1 and tells the young to, “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth…”
This is wisdom: Enjoy God in your youth. Be aware of Him in every aspect of your life.
After all, He is the source of every good thing, and if we can catch a glimpse of Him while growing up, that becomes an anchor for us when we are older – the reality of His faithful goodness, even when our strength has waned and our world has slowed down.
Solomon once again highlights the difference of the stages of our lives in Proverbs 20:29: “The glory of young men is their strength, and the splendor of old men is gray hair.”
But while I was watching the opening of the Fifa World Cup. The words of a song that Katy Perry and a young boy sang caught my attention.
“One day when we’re older, will we still look up in wonder…
“Someday when we’re wiser, will our hearts still have that fire…”
Irrespective of the stages of our lives, we can still live in wonder of the goodness of God and still carry a passionate fire to live fully alive to the glory of God.
So celebrate the young people around you and demonstrate that life does not have to become cynical.
