Five people have died after a head-on collision on the N1 between Winburg and Ventersburg on Sunday evening.

Winburg police were called to the scene at 17:40 on 26 October, where they discovered persons trapped inside a blue Volkswagen Polo Vivo and a maroon Toyota Avanza.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the two motor vehicles were travelling in opposite directions before they collided.

Three adult women and a adult man were certified dead at the scene, whilst an adult male driver succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

Five seriously injured passengers, two men, one woman, and two male minors, were taken to various hospitals.

The circumstances leading to the accident will form part of police investigations, which are currently underway.
