South Africa observed National Child Protection Week from 29 May to 5 June under the theme “Working together in ending violence against children”.
As part of this clebration, the Department of Education hosted a campaign event on 5 June at the Retshepile Daycare Centre in Rheederpark, attended by 250 children, parents and stakeholders. The event addressed child abuse, neglect and exploitation through coordinated community and government action.
Anna Mofokeng, director for Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE), attended alongside ECCE supervisors Gladys Mokodutlo and Ogaisitse Diseko. Social workers included area social worker Boitumelo Mokhothu, Maria Kalake, Refilwe Makhathe and district-based support team member Juliet Zondi. Various Department of Education officials also participated.
The Department of Health, Fire Equip and Takalani Toys partnered in the initiative.

Fire Equip provided safety education focusing on fire hazards and emergency response measures for children. The Department of Health operated a mobile clinic offering vaccinations. Takalani Toys supplied playground equipment including jumping castles, swings and slides.
Maria Makgaotse, matron of the Retshepile Daycare Centre, coordinated the event. Ten ECD matrons from Thabong and Welkom brought children to participate.
The campaign focused on building awareness of child protection through collaborative action between government departments and community stakeholders.
