A rapist who targeted elderly women in the Odendaalsrus district in 2021 and 2022 has been given two life sentences.

Maj. Gen. Apathia Modise, acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in the Free State, welcomed the double life sentence handed down in the Odendaalsrus Regional Court after work done by the Welkom Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit.

WO Jessica Saayman of the Welkom FCS unit completed the investigation of two separate rape cases, in which the accused targeted elderly victims.

Two separate rape cases

The first incident happened on 25 December 2021 at 22:15, when the convicted rapist, Jabulani Stanley Mahlanyane, gained access to the 67-year-old victim’s home, slipped into her bed whilst she was asleep, undressed her, and raped her.

The second offence in September 2022 involved a 70-year-old victim, who had welcomed Mahlanyane into her home because she had seen him before when he visited her daughter. The accused attacked the victim, forcefully

undressed her,and then violated her sexually.

On 11 February in the Odendaalsrus Regional Court, Saayman, together with Magangeni Baloyi of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), concluded presenting the two rape cases.

The presiding judicial officer, Magistrate Nompumelelo Gusha, handed Mahlanyane (41) two separate life sentences for the rape of the 67-year-old victim in 2021, and sexually violating the 70-year-old victim in 2022.
