Concerned Mother, Welkom:

The Circle of Death, the notorious traffic circle at Alma Road close to Amari School, claims the lives of many people.

A circle that is forgotten and not maintained at all: a mass light that has not been working for years; many potholes approaching the circle; no road signs warning drivers there is a circle up ahead. You only notice the circle when you are already in it. What about those dangerous cement advertising structures inside the circle? What about people who are not from Welkom, like with the Intercape bus accident some three or four years back? Many people died in that horrible accident.

The skid marks from Saturday’s accident are still evident where the fated vehicle entered the circle. Some of the wreckage is visible to the left. Photo: Marti Will

On Saturday night (23 August) at around 20:00 this circle claimed yet another life, and in this same terrible accident a young Bronville man, my son, was badly injured. When is it going to stop? When and how are we as citizens of Welkom going to prevent this from happing to our children − your child, my child? Tomorrow this could be your child, and you as a citizen decide to keep quiet. I am raising my voice today.

Please, we need serious and drastic improvement on the dark and dangerous entrances of Welkom.

■ In a Facebook post linked to this accident, an Odendaalsrus resident wrote that the visibility when approaching this circle at night is very confusing. He says the circle is invisible, and the business lights down Alma Road are confusing − creating the impression of a straight road.
