The DA conducted an oversight visit to the Tshehetso Primary School, Bothaville, in the Lejweleputswa District Municipality.
This followed reports that the project of building the school had been dormant for several months.
During the visit on Tuesday (24/01) representatives of the DA discovered an unfinished construction site with half-built structures, which are on the verge of collapsing from neglect.
“More learning institutions are very necessary, especially now that learners in the Free State have started going back to school,” Mahalia Kose, DA councillor in the Lejweleputswa District Municipality.
The project began in 2018 and was scheduled to be completed in 2021.
Workers were relieved in July 2022 and asked to return in September.
However, construction has been further delayed, with no work completed to date.
There are currently only two security personnel on the construction site.
“Due to the constant rain and harsh weather conditions some of the abandoned materials and incomplete structures have already begun to deteriorate,” says Kose.
The structure has seemingly deteriorated to the point where it must be rebuilt.
The unfinished school may necessitate an extension of the building contract or even the hiring of a new contractor to finish the school.
It will also necessitate the replacement of some building materials.
This is expected to result in more funds being allocated to the school’s overall development.
The DA stated that it would follow up and keep monitoring the construction process of the school closely.
