The Welkom Christmas Market was cancelled at 16:00 on Friday, 8 December, leaving some 40 exhibitors in the lurch. This market is used by exhibitors to generate an extra income. Visitors, who had come from as far as Bothaville, and who had booked into overnight accommodation, were left stranded by this abrupt decision. Dulcie Harris of the Welkom Publicity Association says the decision to cancel was not taken lightly, and was based purely on financial indicators. “Taking into account the income and expenditure, we were faced with a massive loss.” Urgent negotiations and behind the scenes scurrying fixed the exhibitors a spot in the parking area of The Strip, where a very successful last-minute market was held. One exhibitor, Luzelle Stolz, says it was very pleasant and successful. “There were many feet, and we did well on the day.” See p. 7 for the story. Photo: Supplied
