I love Acts 17:28 which reads, “For in Him we live and move and have our being.” If we fully understood what this statement means we would live in a constant state of peace and fulfilment within, despite the circumstances which surround us.

When we look at the life of David, we see a man who amidst the worst circumstances and insurmountable odds was able to slay the bear, lion and giant, escape Saul and defeat numerous enemies to become the King of Israel.

But David’s greatest weapon was not a sword or the favour of men.

In Psalm 139 we can see David’s experiential knowledge of the Spirit of God.

He knew that he could never exist in any time or space where the Spirit of God would not be with him.

This relational connection with his Father enabled him to defeat enemies and overcome obstacles and to be restored after falling into sin.

Samuel describes David in 1 Samuel 13:14 as “a man after God’s own heart,” implying David had an absolute, unwavering faith in God, lived in true repentance in response to the mercy of God, desired and knew God’s presence and despite his failures desired to follow God’s laws and decrees.

David knew God, not only in the lawful sense, but relationally.

David trusted God and experienced the faithfulness of God in many circumstances. David was connected to his source.

George MacDonald, a mentor of C.S. Lewis, wrote, “It is the mercy of God that man is not satisfied with his own being…He creates an unsettledness inside, so we would search for the source.”

We were created for relationship with our creator. We can search for all our lives, as many do, for meaning or “happiness”, when true joy and peace can only be found when we meet the author of our lives.

May the perfect love of God find you as you respond to the cry of your heart to know him as your source.
