The University of the Western Cape (UWC) secured the 2025 University Sports South Africa (USSA) 7s championship on Sunday (7 September), with their men’s team defeating the University of Johannesburg (UJ) 19-14 in a closely contested final.
The victory marked a sweet revenge for UWC, who had suffered a 22-12 defeat to the same opponents during the group stage of the tournament. The Cape Town-based university’s triumph demonstrates the unpredictable nature of sevens rugby, where momentum can shift dramatically between matches.
UWC’s path to the final was built on solid group stage performances, with victories over Cape Peninsula University of Technology (17-12) and the University of Fort Hare (26-10) securing their place in the knockout rounds.

Meanwhile, the UWC women’s team enjoyed success in the Bowl Cup competition, recording a commanding 25-0 victory over Sol Plaatje University. Their tournament campaign included impressive group stage wins against Wits (26-14) and TUT (14-5), though they fell 17-5 to UJ in their final group match.
The USSA 7s tournament continues to showcase the strength of university rugby across South Africa, with institutions from across the country competing for national honours in the abbreviated format of the game.
This championship victory adds to UWC’s growing reputation in university sport and provides valuable experience for players aspiring to higher levels of rugby competition.
