The United States Senate has voted in favour of extending the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) for another two years, bringing relief to South African exporters and workers whose jobs depend on trade with America.
AGOA allows eligible African countries, including South Africa, to export qualifying goods to the US without paying import duties. The programme has been a significant contributor to the South African economy, with the automotive sector among its largest beneficiaries.
The Motor Industry Staff Association (MISA) has welcomed the development after a period of uncertainty for exporters.
“This is good news for workers and for the South African economy. Trade that flows freely means jobs are secure. Every vehicle and every component that leaves our shores supports a chain of employment that reaches right into our dealerships and workshops,” says Martlé Keyter, MISA’s chief executive officer for operations.
The benefits extend beyond vehicle manufacturing and agriculture. The retail motor sector, which includes dealerships, workshops and parts distribution, employs hundreds of thousands of South Africans. A strong automotive export trade sustains demand across the entire value chain.
When exporters can trade with confidence, the ripple effect reaches workers and families throughout the industry. The extension offers a measure of reassurance to industries that rely on stable access to international markets.
MISA says stable trade translates to secure jobs for its members across the motor industry.
