THEUNISSEN – The Brandfort Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit has traced and arrested the mother of an abandoned two-day-old infant in Brandfort following the discovery of the newborn near Theunissen.

The specialised unit arrested the 25-year-old woman on Saturday after a thorough investigation.

She has been charged with attempted murder in connection with the abandonment of her newborn child.

The accused is expected to appear before the Theunissen Magistrate’s Court in due course to face the charges against her.

Infant discovered

The infant was discovered at approximately 15:00 on Friday 12 December, near a hiking spot on the R30 outside Theunissen.

A man and his cousin were walking to the hiking area when a man unknown to them informed them about a baby beneath a tree in the vicinity.

Rescue

The Good Samaritans searched the area and discovered the male infant, who was only a few days old. As heavy rain was imminent, they took the child home and immediately contacted the Theunissen police and emergency medical services (EMS).

Medical practitioners transported the baby boy to a local hospital for medical observation and care, where he remains under professional supervision.
