JOHANNESBURG – The high-stakes Varsity Football men’s derby featuring Gauteng teams — the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) — is set to end an unbeaten run or extend wining streak.

Two of the three undefeated sides meet at Wits Stadium. Kick-off is at 19:15. UJ are topping the standings with nine points while Wits are breathing down their necks with seven points. The other undefeated side, the University of the Western Cape (UWC), tackle Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) at UWC Stadium at 18:30. The trio at the helm are looking to tighten their grip on the log to secure semifinal berths.

Immense pressure is on the defending Varsity Football champions, the University of the Free State (UFS), who remain winless heading into round four of the competition. The Kovsies face off against the University of Limpopo (UL) in a must-win outing at the Oscar Mpetha Stadium in a battle for their first win of the tournament. Kick-off is at 17:00. This marks the Kovsies’ first away match of the season, having lost all three of their home matches at Shimla Park Stadium in Bloemfontein.

Both sides Kovsies and Turfies of Limpopo are currently rooted to the bottom of the log, having suffered three consecutive defeats to start the season. They are playing catch-up, with the pressure more on UFS led by Mokete Tsotetsi, who guided them to their maiden trophy last year.
The tactical vulnerability of both sides makes this a critical, must-win match to salvage their respective campaigns.

The Kovsies have uncharacteristically conceded eight goals in three games — a stark contrast to the defensive ability of their coach Tsotetsi, a hard-tackling defender in his prime. Costly individual errors and failure to deal with mounting pressure have crippled their title defence prospects.

The UFS men’s latest 3-1 defeat by Wits has raised the pressure to make amends in upcoming matches and salvage pride. The other losses were 1-0 to Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and 4-2 to the University of Pretoria (UP-Tuks) in the opening game of the tournament.

The Turfies have conceded seven goals and are yet to score a single goal in the competition. Their poor run compels them to make clinical finishing their top priority equally as their opponents from Free State. Three consecutive defeats set the stage for a fiercely contested battle as they look to turn their campaigns around.
