In a statement from the UIM, De Beer is described as a warrior and a fighter for all.

Frikkie de Necker, a member of the party, said a warrior’s voice may fall silent, but his echo lives on in the hearts of a nation.

“To every South African—black, white, brown, rich, poor, hopeful, weary—today we mourn not just a man, but a movement. Neil de Beer was more than a political figure. He was a firebrand of conviction, a servant of the people, and a relentless voice for justice. Whether you knew him as the founder of the United Independent Movement, a former adviser to Nelson Mandela, or simply as ‘Neil’, you knew he stood for something greater than himself.”

“Neil walked boldly into spaces others feared to enter. He challenged corruption, uplifted communities, and reminded us that freedom is not a gift—it is a responsibility. His legacy is not confined to speeches or manifestos. It lives in every South African who dares to believe in a better tomorrow.”

John Steenhuisen, leader of the Democratic Alliance, said that in De Beer’s passing, South Africa has lost a powerful voice for change.

“With his uncompromising and often confrontational style, he upset many, but he also spoke for many. His convictions and fearless personality made him a force to be reckoned with and a valuable partner to the Multi-Party Charter. For his role in bringing the Charter about, the DA will remember him fondly,” said Steenhuisen.
