THE Lions Club of Uitenhage will be one of four charities to benefit from this weekend’s Big Walk for Cancer. A change of venue for the finish of the annual Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer has opened up space for more involvement by community organisations. For the first time charities from Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage will be able to raise funds at the finish line, and will serve up boerewors rolls and pancakes.
The Lions Club of Uitenhage will have a stall at the finish grounds to raise funds for paediatric cancer and diabetes testing.
For those wanting something sweet Cheshire Homes will have a stall fully geared up to serve fresh pancakes to the thousands of walkers expected on the day. Funds raised will go towards purchasing batteries and parts for the wheelchairs, as well as a nurse bell system and consumables such as nappies.
There will also be other food and refreshment stalls owned by small business owners from Nelson Mandela Bay. Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) is the main beneficiary of the 2019 Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer.
Funds raised will go towards the purchase of a people carrier to transport patients to and from treatment centres in Port Elizabeth.
The Big Walk for Cancer will start at 08:00 from the Second Avenue Summerstrand entrance to The Sun Boardwalk on October 26.
Participants will be able to pick up their numbers and pink T-shirts at registration on the 24th and 25th of October 2019. There will be no late registration held on the day of the walk.
