GAMBLE Street Secondary School is proud of its top three matriculants who amid difficult circumstances did very well in the 2020 matric exams.

Liyema Oliphant lost her father in January 2020 and her mother in June 2020. Despite the difficulties of COVID-19, she had to cope with the emotional trauma of losing both her parents in her matric year.

Liyema obtained an average of 63% and has been provisionally accepted at University of Johannesburg for Bachelor of Education.

Milani Kelemane (head girl) obtained two distinctions and an average of 72%. She has been provisionally accepted at Nelson Mandela University for Bachelor of Nursing Science.

Rearabetswe Busa (deputy head boy) obtained one distinction with an average of 71%. He arrived at Gamble Street as a Sotho Home Language learner in Grade 8 and obtained 75% in isiXhosa Home Language in Grade 12. His father was tragically killed in a road accident in Johannesburg while he was writing his final exam. He is provisionally accepted for Bachelor of Pharmacy at University of Johannesburg.

According to Ian Balie, Principal at Gamble Street Secondary School, “The school obtained a below par overall pass percentage for 2020, but we are proud of our top performers with their achievements. It serves as motivation for the matric class of 2021. Proof that even in difficult times, excellent achievements are possible.” -HEILIE COMBRINCK
