IF you have an older model vehicle, take good care of it as the police in Uitenhage warn that these vehicles are sought after by car thieves.

Police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart said police have noticed that there has been a sudden increase in the theft of motor vehicles in their precinct, especially during the past week.

“We are urgently appealing to the community to implement precautionary measures in terms of the safeguarding of their motor vehicles. Owners are advised to park their vehicles inside garages and to install additional security measures in their vehicles.”

Captain Swart said motor vehicle thieves mainly focus on older types of vehicles, ranging from brands such as a Toyota Tazz, Toyota Corolla, VW Golf, Isuzu bakkie, Ford Ranger to Nissan Sentra.

“The theft of motor vehicles occurred in different residential and business areas of Uitenhage, including the parking areas of shopping centres and apartments.”

The public is requested to report any suspicious persons or vehicles immediately to their local police station. Uitenhage SAPS can be reached on 041 996 3438 or 041 996 3433/34/36.
