Police in Kariega are concerned about the sudden increase in the theft out of motor vehicles and appeal to the public to be more alert and responsible when they park their vehicles.

According to SAPS Uitenhage police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart, several incidents were reported where no forced entry was used to gain access into the vehicles, and it is suspected that car jamming devices are used to gain access into vehicles.

“Incidents are most likely to occur at venues where large numbers of people are gathering for example: parking lots at shopping centres, sports events, churches, or festivals,” said Captain Swart.

“Car jamming occurs when a criminal uses signal-blocking technology which effectively blocks a vehicle from being locked properly. This happens when motorists walk away from their cars while pressing their remote without ensuring that their vehicles are physically locked. Several incidents have been reported to police where valuables that were left inside the vehicle, were stolen.

“Owners are requested to double check and ensure that the vehicle is indeed securely locked before walking away from their parked vehicle,” said Captain Swart.

Police also want to provide the following safety hints:

  • Check that your car is locked securely before walking away from it.
  • Do not leave your vehicle unlocked when you are away from it, even for only a short period.
  • Do not leave your property (including loose cash, shopping bags, etc.) in plain view in your vehicle.
  • Police advise that you rather take your valuables with you.
  • If unavoidable, make sure it is out of sight.
  • Be on the lookout for anyone who might be acting suspiciously and report it immediately to the local police on 041 996 3438 or the 10111 Centre on 041 399 0200.
