DESPATCH – Despatch Preparatory School is celebrating an outstanding national achievement by Grade 4 learner Swazi Hobongwana, who was awarded first place nationally in the Grade 4 category at the Sanlam WOW Spelling Festival in Cape Town.

Swazi represented Despatch Preparatory at the national competition, competing against Grade 4 learners from across the country. His first-place achievement places him at the top of his category nationally and marks a significant milestone for both Swazi and his school.

For Swazi, however, this achievement is part of a much longer journey.

A series of videos from his younger years at Despatch Preparatory captures memorable interactions between Swazi and the school’s then-principal, Madelene Sachse. The light-hearted conversations and jokes provide a glimpse of the young learner he was and offer a nostalgic look at the early years of a child who has now achieved national recognition.

Those memories make his recent success all the more meaningful. The little Preppie who once shared jokes and conversations with his principal has grown into a confident young learner who has now taken first place nationally in Grade 4 at one of the country’s spelling competitions.

Swazi travelled to Cape Town for the national event, accompanied by his teacher, Ashwin Willeman, and his parents, who were there to support and share in this important milestone.

Adding a special connection to the occasion was Lisinda de Jager, one of the speakers at the event. De Jager is herself a former Despatch Preparatory learner, having attended the school from 1994 to 1997.

Her presence created a memorable link between past and present — a former Preppie returning to be part of an occasion celebrating the achievements of a new generation of learners.

For Despatch Preparatory, Swazi’s success represents more than a competition result. It is a celebration of a learner’s dedication, the support of his family and teacher, and the role of the school in nurturing young minds.

From his early days at the school on the Hill to standing proudly on a national stage, Swazi Hobongwana has given Despatch Preparatory a wonderful reason to celebrate.

His achievement is a testament to the power of perseverance, confidence and a love of learning — and a reminder that today’s little Preppies can become tomorrow’s national achievers.
