DESPATCH – Despatch Preparatory School recently bid farewell to its long-serving principal, Madelène Sachse, who has retired after 40 years of dedicated service to the institution.
Sachse began her career at the school in 1986 as a teacher and remained a committed member of staff throughout her tenure. In 2017, she was appointed as principal, a position in which she played a key role in guiding the school through a period of significant growth and development.
During her leadership, Despatch Preparatory evolved from a school offering education up to Grade 3 into a full primary school. The school currently accommodates learners up to Grade 6 and is set to expand to Grade 7 next year.

A number of infrastructure developments were completed under her guidance.
These include the construction of new netball courts, two additional bathroom facilities, and 11 new classrooms, five of which are equipped with their own bathrooms. The school also acquired a 22-seater Crafter bus to improve learner transport.
Sachse was a visible and consistent presence in the daily life of the school, known for greeting learners each morning at the school entrance. Staff members have described her leadership style as supportive and approachable, with a strong emphasis on learner wellbeing and personal development.
In the weeks leading up to her retirement, learners expressed their appreciation through letters and messages, reflecting the positive impact she had on the school community.
Speaking at her farewell, Sachse described the school as her second home. “I have spent more time here than in my own home, and it will always remain a special place to me,” she said.
Reflecting on her career, she noted that teaching had been both a passion and a privilege. She emphasised the importance of understanding and supporting each learner, stating that every child holds a unique place within the school environment.
Sachse leaves behind a strengthened institution, both in terms of its facilities and its sense of community. Her contribution to Despatch Preparatory School is expected to have a lasting impact for years to come.
