THE desperate plight of Huis Najaar after COVID-19 claimed the lives of 14 residents resulted in the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South reacting and raising some funds for immediate use by the old age home.

“In just a week the Rotary club raised the funds, and were able to hand over a gift of R2500. For much good reason Rotary never hands over cash, so on this occasion it was decided to give them an electronic gift card,” said Clive Hassell, president of the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South.

Rotarian Hemant Nathoo, a member of the club and owner of OK Minimark in Mosel, offered to increase the value of whatever the club raised by 25%.

The chairperson of Huis Najaar, Belinda van der Bank, said that on behalf of the residents she was “Utterly grateful for the generosity of the Rotary Club and the rest of Despatch who have rallied round and supported them during this very difficult time.

“The COVID-19 wave that affected us has to a greater extent passed and the residents can look forward to a brighter future,” said Van der Bank.
