The Roads and Transport Directorate has officially commenced rehabilitation work on the Matanzima Bridge in KwaNobuhle, Kariega.

This initiative forms part of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Disaster Recovery Programme.

The work in progress is to demolish the damaged concrete floor slabs, divert the river to enable embankment trimming, and construct an access road.

The department will also prepare works for backfilling, remove excess material under the bridge, trim the embankment, and prepare for crack sealing.

Senior Director of Roads and Transport, Givon Van Eyck, said, “Contractors were appointed on April 9, 2025. The lead contractors are Power Construction and Empa Structures.”

He added that the project is projected to take approximately six months to complete.

The metro shared, “This critical infrastructure recovery project is a testament to the municipality’s commitment to restoring and improving essential transport links in the region.”
