MICAYLE Hendricks, a talented and dedicated young rugby player, has achieved a remarkable milestone by being chosen to represent the u/18 South African Women’s Rugby Team. This selection is a dream come true for Hendricks, who has worked tirelessly to hone her skills and pursue her passion for the sport.

“I feel like a dream of mine is becoming a reality,” Hendricks said, beaming with pride. “I’ve always loved rugby, and to be selected for the national team is an incredible honour.”

Hendricks’ journey in rugby began at a young age, playing informal games with her cousins at a local gym. It was here that a rugby coach noticed her natural talent and encouraged her to take up the sport formally. She then joined Progress Rugby Club in Kariega, where her teammates and coaches nurtured her growth and encouraged her to give her best.

“Rugby has always been my motivation,” Hendricks explained. “I love watching it on TV, and I’ve always told myself that one day I’ll be playing on that field.”

Throughout her rugby journey, Hendricks has been driven by a self-motivated passion for the sport. Her dedication and perseverance have paid off, earning her a place among the country’s top young players.

Balancing academic responsibilities with rugby commitments is a significant challenge, but Hendricks has demonstrated remarkable time management skills. “It’s difficult, but I make it work,” she said. “I try to do my homework at home after rugby practice.”

Hendricks’ goals are ambitious and inspiring. She aims to make herself and her family proud, and ultimately play for the female South African 1st team. “I want to make myself proud and my family proud,” she said. “One day, I will play for the female South African first team.”

The principal of Gamble Street Secondary School where Hendricks is a Grade 10 learner, Keith August, expressed great pride in her achievement, highlighting the school’s commitment to supporting learners in achieving their dreams. “We are thrilled to see Micayle’s hard work and dedication paying off,” said the principal. “We will continue to support her in every way possible, both on and off the field.”

August added that although the school is not able to support the learners financially, they instil discipline in them, to avoid social challenges that young people face.
