Moegamat Shakier Vockerodt (12), widely known in the community as “Xavi,” after the Barcelona legend and his role model, was selected to participate in an elite four-team football tournament in Mutare, Zimbabwe.
The tournament, an initiative of Kitoko Soccer School, caters to aspiring footballers aged 7 to 19. A statement shared with participants reads, “We believe this trip will provide invaluable opportunities for personal development and allow our players the chance to be scouted by PSL (Premier Soccer League) teams.” The tournament begins on 28 August, with participants returning on 1 September.
The statement further highlighted, “Kitoko Soccer School has chosen Moegamat Shakier Vockerodt, a talented young player from Kariega, to join us on this exciting trip.”
Jamaine Accom, a family friend committed to supporting Xavi’s dream, has been instrumental in raising awareness and organising funding initiatives. Accom shared that Xavi’s journey into football began under the guidance of his father, Arief Vockerodt, a celebrated footballer in Kariega and surrounding areas.
“In June, I helped raise money to send him for trials at Kitoko Soccer School in Pretoria, where he showcased his immense talent. He also played in the Volkswagen Vaya Cup U/13 tournament in Johannesburg the same month, scoring four goals across six matches, including the semi-finals and finals. I believe Xavi is a gifted footballer with incredible potential,” Accom said of the Caritas Primary School learner.
Accom strongly believes that exposure to the right scouts and clubs could change Xavi’s life and surroundings for the better. Notably, Kitoko Soccer School is managed by retired Kaizer Chiefs legend Willard Katsande, further enhancing Xavi’s chances of being noticed by professional clubs.
Given Xavi’s underprivileged background, his family is relying on friends and the community for financial assistance. “Thus far, we’ve raised R3,500, but we’re still far from the required R15,000,” said Accom.
Highlighting the family’s financial struggles, Accom added, “Xavi’s father expressed his stress over meeting the payment deadline of 23 August, having tried all he could. Despite the pressure, the family is not giving up.”
He concluded with a heartfelt plea, “We urge the community to help keep Xavi off the streets and on the field, so he can build a brighter future for himself and his family. With many youths falling under bad influences, supporting young talents like Xavi means fostering hope and opportunity.”
