MetroFibre Networx awaits nominations of schools in Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole wishing to receive fibre for a year at no cost.

One school will be eligible in each of the seven areas that MetroFibre operates in, namely Pretoria, Johannesburg, Witbank, Klerksdorp, Pietermaritzburg, Durban and Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole.

In a media statement explaining why MetroFibre offers schools fibre at no cost for a year, Nelson Mandela is quoted: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

And it was David Warlick who said, “We need technology in every classroom and in every student and teacher’s hand, because it is the pen and paper of our time, and it is the lens through which we experience much of our world.”

Therefore MetroFibre Networx finds it fitting to use its best endeavours to bring together education and technology, and providing the connectivity needed to access the world wide web is one way that the company can facilitate that.

What exactly is offered to each school that will receive free fibre?

The promotion entails the installation of and subscription to MetroFibre’s 50mbps uncapped internet connectivity services at no cost to the nominated school for a period of 12 months from date of activation.

Thereafter, the school will be eligible for 50% discount on the monthly recurring cost of business retail prices should they wish to continue.

What will the advantages on ground level be to the school?

Internet access provides the means for children to improve academic performance, promote research skills and critical thinking, encourage independent or collaborative learning, enhance motivation and strengthen self-confidence.

Fibre connectivity creates sustainability and opportunity in a number of ways for schools, teachers and learners. It’s so much more than just being connected to the internet – it’s an opportunity for the children and teachers to enhance their education and teaching, experience the world, access knowledge and learning and at the end of the day, enjoy some downtime and entertainment too.

It’s also the key means by which virtually all administrative functions are done including school communications and so on.
