“I just want to help as many children as possible,” said compassionate cyclist Johan Oosthuizen upon the chance to assist an eight-year-old girl in obtaining a specific hearing aid.
Fuel on Wheels is organising a fundraiser named “Ride for Olivia,” which will be a 24-hour marathon ride in Despatch to support a local girl. The marathon will start on Friday, November 29, at 12:00 and continue until Saturday, November 30, at 12:00, at Die Kraaines, 51 Main Street, Despatch. The goal of the day is to raise R25 000 for Olivia to acquire the hearing aid she needs.
According to Oosthuizen, Olivia has been falling behind in some areas at school owing to her hearing difficulties. Having a hearing aid would not only bring joy to the little girl but also assist her in receiving the education she deserves.
Oosthuizen added,
Not only is Fuel on Wheels cycling for a good cause, but they will also be organising a steak and chips special at A Piece Of Heaven Coffee Shop & Nursery in Despatch, along with selling Fuel on Wheels merchandise. The special will cost R150 each, and all the proceeds will go towards the Ride for Olivia fundraiser.
“I spoke to Olivia’s doctor yesterday, and she said she is very pleased with the device and how it will enhance Olivia’s daily life going forward,” stated Oosthuizen.
Oosthuizen further expressed that while he is more than happy to help Olivia by cycling, he acknowledges the significant task of raising these funds and emphasises the need for community support to make this possible for Olivia.
“We cyclists can ride and do our marathons, but the people who donate, our community, those are the real change-makers,” remarked Oosthuizen.
Anyone can contribute to this initiative with R10 on the day of the marathon, although donations are not limited to that amount. Donors are welcome to contribute as much as they like towards the initiative.
