A charity initiative called Sharing is Caring was recently established by a group of five friends who identified a need in their communities to support low-to-zero-income households. The UD Express asked them to view questions with regard to their mission.
What triggered the idea of establishing this charity?
The idea was merely a discussion and a plan among the group for a very long time. However, when the pandemic hit our communities and the need for essentials increased dramatically, the group started to finally execute their strategy to help people desperately in need. Moreover, the group sees this initiative to give back what they have been blessed with, and to involve the community to assist others through sharing.
Who are the main beneficiaries of this charity?
Nelson Mandela Bay residents in need are the ultimate beneficiaries of this initiative. However, for the upcoming toiletry drive, a small community located in the Despatch area, Kingston, will be the recipients.
What are the products/items to be handed out?
For the upcoming event, all kinds of toiletries will be handed out. The toiletries are aimed at all genders, for adults and babies in all age categories.
How do you establish who will be the beneficiaries?
The members within the group are all located within different areas in Nelson Mandela Bay, which are Kariega, Despatch and Gqeberha. With each drive, we will aim to attend and rotate in suburbs/communities within all these areas.
How can the public get involved?
The public can get involved by sharing toiletry items by purchasing these items and donating them, or via monetary donations. Members in the Sharing is Caring group can collect the items or donors can drop off items if need be.
Toiletry drive – 4 September
COVID-19 worsened the conditions of families who were already suffering financially. Therefore Sharing is Caring aims at reaching out to individuals who can help out by sharing with those in need.
The toiletries needed include: soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, roll-on (deodorant), lotion, sanitary pads, toilet paper and baby nappies. All items need to be donated by 3 September. For drop offs or collections call 082 323 8578.
Sharing is Caring can also be contacted through social media platforms, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
