Aviwe Ngabom, a local thespian from Despatch, was recently cast in one of South Africa’s most popular Afrikaans telenovellas, Kelders van Geheime.
Ngabom, who plays the role of Unathi, has been passionate about acting since his high school days. He began acting in 2015 and started participating in competitions. One of his earliest highlights was competing in a KykNet drama competition held in Cape Town. Professionally, he began acting in 2021 when he got his debut role as Avukile Makwethu on the popular KykNet show, Arendsvlei.
Speaking to UD Express, Ngabom said that what inspired him to pursue a role in Kelders van Geheime is the fact that he has been a fan of the show since its inception.
“I was drawn to the show’s exceptional quality, stellar cast, and captivating storyline. I’ve always wanted to share the screen with the best in the industry, such as Sandra Prinsloo. Joining the show is a dream come true,” Ngabom said.
Growing up in Despatch, Ngabom said Afrikaans was not foreign to him. He attended Afrikaans-speaking schools, from Despatch Primary School and later, Hoërskool Despatch.
“Although I spoke isiXhosa at home, I never studied it in school. The transition has been smooth, thanks to my background in Afrikaans.”
Ngabom mentioned one of the behind-the-scene moments that stayed with him.
Not only that, but he has formed a strong relationship with his cast members, Jurgen McEwan, who plays Stil Piet/Mkhuseli on the show, and Aphiwe Sithole, who plays Athandwa, as they help him practise his lines regularly.
Ngabom said he hopes that Unathi’s story resonates with young people who have had to take on parental responsibilities.
“Unathi’s character shows that even in the face of adversity, one can mature and make positive choices. I’m proud to represent Despatch, Gqeberha, and the Eastern Cape, and I hope my role makes them proud too.”
Ngabom said that as an actor, it is important to study the craft and get a reputable agent.
“This foundation will help you navigate the industry and increase your chances of success. But most importantly, always believe in yourself and your gift.”
He added, “Trust in your abilities, stay focused, and never give up on your dreams. To all the young people from Despatch and the Eastern Cape, I say: ‘This babe is going somewhere!’ – and so can you!”
Catch the gripping and dramatic show, Kelders van Geheime every weekday on e.tv, DStv channel 194 at 18:00.
