Academic excellence has a new face at Muir College Boys’ High School.

Sabir Hippolyte, a Class of 2025 matriculant, has made history by becoming the first learner to receive the prestigious white Honours blazer โ€” an award reserved for academic achievers who maintain an aggregate of 86.8% or higher across major examinations and learners who achieved success at the highest national level in sport (SA colours).

With an outstanding 87% aggregate, Hippolyte’s journey from a determined Grade 10 learner to Muir’s top academic performer is one of dedication, strategic planning, and unwavering focus.

Speaking to UD Express, Hippolyte shared that the moment he realised that he had the potential to achieve academic excellence at this level was during his Grade 10 year.

“That year, I achieved a third position in Grade 10. This was motivated by my realisation that I wanted to succeed and achieve the best that I could. After this Grade 10 achievement, the bar was set for me and I was not prepared to drop it. I was motivated to aim even higher.”

He added that his study routine is all about balance.

“I usually start preparing for exams a month before, keeping in mind that I remain up to date with my studies during the year. During the evenings, I ensure that I fully understand each day’s work. I also keep up with summaries and repeating the work out loud to myself.

“This, I find to be quite helpful as a study method.” He stated that continuous and early preparation significantly reduces his stress levels and avoids the last-minute burnout.

Every high achiever faces obstacles, and Hippolyte shared his.

“My biggest challenge during my matric year was managing my time, as well as deciding my future career path. Time management, in balancing all school-related activities, as well as maintaining a healthy personal lifestyle with family and friends, was challenging.”

However, he was determined to balance his focus and to ensure his overall personal well-being.

Hippolyte added that the old saying, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail,” is also an important saying that helped him throughout this year with the time management issues.

“These challenges taught me that pressure is part of growth. It helped me to become more resilient, improving my confidence in dealing with different challenges at once.”

The last Honours blazer recipient, Lilitha Hempe, received a black Honours blazer in 2017.

On being the first to be awarded the white blazer, Hippolyte shared, “I am extremely proud of my achievement, but I must thank my teachers, my family and friends for their support and guidance. I hope that I have inspired other learners to strive towards becoming the best at their academic, sporting, cultural or other endeavours.”

He added, “It is important to always celebrate our small successes and achievements along the way and to remember that a solid work ethic will always deliver results.”

Sharing his goals beyond matric, he said that after matric, he intends to pursue the degree of his dreams, to qualify as a Chartered Accountant.

Having built a solid foundation in my skill set, including my high work ethic, dedication, and perseverance, I am determined to tackle any obstacles that may come my way to achieve this goal.

As for his legacy at Muir, he hopes that his journey has inspired other learners and prays that one day he will be in a position to give back to his school, Muir College and to his community.
