In a bid to enhance the physical well-being and overall quality of life for elderly residents, Yad Marpe Physiotherapists have introduced a group exercise class tailored specifically for seniors at Jabulani and Jubilee Retirement Centre.

The initiative aims to emphasise regular physical activity among the elderly, which benefits health and vitality. These classes are free of charge.

Joy Braaf, managing owner of Yad-Marpe and physiotherapist, explained: “We want to promote an active and healthy lifestyle and to encourage overall movement, mobility and wellbeing to our seniors.”

The class, which brings residents of varying fitness levels and abilities together, offers a range of low-impact exercises designed to improve mobility, strength, flexibility and balance. It focuses on gentle movements, stretching and light aerobic activities, ensuring safety and comfort.

Benefits of physical activity for elders

Regular exercise maintains and enhances the health of older adults.

Its benefits extend far beyond physical fitness alone; it is scientifically proven to provide an array of advantages:

Improved Cardiovascular Health: Exercise helps strengthen the heart and improve blood circulation, reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Enhanced Strength and Balance: Targeted exercises can help increase muscle strength, flexibility and balance, reducing the risk of falls and fractures.

Increased Mental Well-being: Physical activity has a positive impact on mental health, promoting release of endorphins known to elevate mood and boost overall happiness.

Prevention of Chronic Diseases: Regular exercise can help manage chronic conditions such as arthritis, osteoporosis, and diabetes, improving the overall quality of life for older adults.

Social Engagement: Exercise classes foster social connections among the elderly and a sense of cohesion, support and company, community and belonging.
