The police’s Bomb Disposal Unit yesterday (3 September)
successfully deactivated a Lancer in the vicinity of Birch Court in Alwyn Road,
Uitsig.

A Lancer is a grenade that can be launched from a rifle.

According to Captain Odwa Makupula, police spokesperson for
Ravensmead police, around 12:30 police received a complaint about a “bomb”
thrown at the block.

“On their arrival at the scene the officers alerted the
Bomb Disposal Unit, immediately dispersed the public and cordoned the scene
off,” he said.

“The unit arrived and inspected the device, and
confirmed it was a Lancer rifle-grenade bomb. They safely deactivated it and no
loss of life, injuries or 
damages were caused. Post-inspection was done and the area
declared safe.”

Makupula said no-one had been arrested.

“It is suspected to be
gang-related,” he said, “but  an inquiry will be opened today to
follow-up and link identified possible suspect or suspects.
