Two cyclists died after being struck by a car on the R102 near Kleinvlei, Eerste River on Sunday, 27 September. Both died on the scene.

The Facebook page WC Live Traffic & Safety Reports was among the first to report the incident.

The incident was described as tragic by online commentators, with questions raised about why the driver failed to see the cyclists and how fast he was travelling. One commenter also pointed out that such incidents are common in South Africa and called for greater accountability.

Another person who passed the scene said she saw blue overalls, which she believed indicated that the cyclists may have been on their way to work.

Sunday’s deaths marked the third fatal accident to occur on Cape Town’s roads recently. 

A previous incident occurred on 12 August near Blue Route Mall, when Laura Blake, a 51-year-old Constantia resident, was struck from behind by a vehicle while riding with friends. The group had set off from Tokai, and the crash occurred at about 05:40.

Blake suffered a shattered pelvis, a broken elbow, fractured vertebrae in her neck, and six broken ribs. She was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Tokai Melomed Hospital in a critical condition, where she remained in a coma and on ventilator support. Despite medical intervention, she died on Saturday 5 September from complications of her injuries.

According to police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala, Kleinvlei police have opened two culpable homicide cases following the crash on the R102 (Strand Road).

“Two men were cycling to work when a silver-grey Hyundai i10 struck them. Both were declared dead on the scene by medical personnel.”

He added that the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.

The Pedal Power Association, an organisation focused on safe cycling, says it has approached the police for more information, including whether alcohol tests were conducted on the scene.
