Two people have been arrested for stealing personal belongings from emergency medical services (EMS) personnel who were attending to a call in Bonteheuwel.

According to Sgt Samantha Adonis, spokesperson for Bishop Lavis police, EMS personnel attended to a callout in Bonteheuwel and while they were loading the patient, someone grabbed a personal bag from the front of the ambulance.

The EMS personnel reported the matter to police, who acted quickly on the information.

Bag stolen

“I want to make it clear that the EMS personnel were not robbed, but the bag was stolen. During the follow-up on leads, they found the property of the EMS member and arrested a 21-year-old and a 30-year-old men on charges of possession of stolen property,” Adonis said.

Angus McKenzie, local ward councillor, said EMS was responding to a very sick elderly lady in Bluegum Avenue.

“If attacks like this continue, Bonteheuwel risks being declared a red zone, which means ambulances, fire services and paramedics will not enter without armed escorts. That means longer response times and the delay could cost someone’s mother, father, child or neighbour their life,” McKenzie said.

Aliens

McKenzie said the bag was not stolen by “aliens”, but by people from the community.

“Let me be very clear, this was people from our own community. So I’m asking the community directly, we must stop this before Bonteheuwel pays the price. Because protecting our community is everyone’s responsibility,” he said.
