As the winter solstice approaches, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) is calling on South Africans to brave the cold and take part in its annual Winter Solstice Swim, a nationwide fundraising initiative aimed at supporting lifesaving rescue operations and water safety programmes.

The NSRI Winter Solstice Swim 2026 will take place on Sunday 21 June marking the longest night of the year. The initiative encourages individuals, teams, and communities to host their own plunge events and raise funds for the organisation.

Participants are invited to take the plunge in the sea, tidal pools, swimming pools, dams, or even through an ice bucket challenge, joining a growing tradition that unites communities across the country in support of the NSRI.

Volunteers on duty

NSRI volunteers remain on duty throughout the year, ready to respond at a moment’s notice, even in the harshest winter conditions.

According to NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon, the initiative reflects both the dedication of rescue crews and the importance of public support in sustaining their work.

“NSRI volunteers are on duty year-round, ready to spring into action at a moment’s notice, even on the coldest day of the year,” Lambinon said.

He added that the Winter Solstice Swim gives the public a meaningful way to contribute to the organisation’s mission.

“Each year, teams of NSRI volunteers from our rescue bases brave the plunge to raise funds for their station. This year we challenge you to organise a winter solstice plunge and help support our lifesaving work,” he said.

Participants are encouraged to create fundraising campaigns and rally friends, family, and colleagues to get involved. Every contribution helps ensure NSRI crews remain equipped, trained, and ready to save lives.
