The community health day presented by the Rotary Club of Durbanville brought free dental, eye and general care to 130 patients in Fisantekraal.

The event’s success rested on the efforts of 80 volunteers, who contributed their time, professional skill and compassion throughout the day.

Volunteers were drawn from the Rotary Club of Durbanville itself and members of the wider community, as well as dental students from the University of the Western Cape.

The students performed extractions, fillings and cleaning. They also supplied toothpaste and toothbrushes to each patient.

Eye care screening

Eye care screening was done by the team of the Rotary Club of Melkbosstrand, while nurses from Tygerberg Hospice assisted with blood pressure and blood glucose tests.

“The Fisantekraal Clinic, which made its facility available for this event, and Groot Phesantekraal View Spar also played a key role — providing lunch for the volunteers, including chicken burgers, fries and wonderful dessert doughnuts,” said Graham Harmsworth, president of the Rotary Club of Durbanville. He thanked everyone involved for their support and generosity.

“Throughout the day, the atmosphere reflected Rotary’s guiding principle of service above self. Every patient who came through the doors was met with care, dignity and kindness — a reminder of what communities can achieve when people unite around a shared purpose,” he said.

Milestone event

“The community turnout and volunteer spirit mark a milestone event at Fisantekraal Clinic,” he said.
