A diamond-encrusted chain stolen in Parklands has been recovered after metro police tracked down a suspected getaway vehicle.

A separate K-9 operation has also uncovered suspected drugs at two locations.

The robbery took place on Saturday 17 October, when a person was robbed of a 10-carat white gold chain set with diamonds. The jewellery was initially reported to be worth more than R300 000.

Metro police circulated a description of the suspected getaway vehicle to help locate those responsible.

At about 19:00, officers spotted the vehicle travelling along Viking Way and pulled it over. A search of the vehicle uncovered a large amount of cash.

Further questioning reportedly revealed that the suspects had sold the stolen jewellery to a vendor in Long Street in the Cape Town CBD.

Officers followed up on the information and recovered the chain. All the suspects were charged with robbery and handed over to Table View police.

K-9 operations uncover drugs

In separate operations, metro police’s K-9 unit, including K-9 Virus, helped uncover suspected drugs concealed inside a vehicle and at a residential complex.

The City highlighted the role of its K-9 units in supporting crime-fighting efforts and helping officers detect contraband that may otherwise go unnoticed.

“Our K-9 units provide an invaluable service in strengthening crime detection and supporting frontline officers,” the City said.

“Their specialised capabilities help uncover drugs and other contraband that might otherwise go undetected, contributing to safer communities and ensuring that those involved in criminal activity are brought to account.”

The City did not provide further details about the quantities or types of drugs found or whether arrests were made in connection with the separate drug-related incidents.
