Spier’s ‘Routes of Sound’ lines up 40 musicians across three winter weekends

Spier Wine Farm near Stellenbosch is extending its Routes of Sound music series from a single weekend to three separate winter events, with performances scheduled for 3 and 4 July, 31 July and 1 August, and 21 and 22 August. Presented by Brett Bailey and Third World Bunfight, the series will feature more than 40 local musicians across the three weekends.

A roving music experience

The format takes audiences through a selection of atmospheric spaces on the farm, where they experience three performances paired with Spier’s Creative Block wines, before gathering for a finale concert.

The concept draws on the ideas of both “routes” and “roots”, framing the event as an opportunity to experience music in an unplugged, intimate setting. Music has been central to Spier’s identity and the farm has a track record of supporting South African artists.

Weekend line-ups

Each weekend offers a completely different programme. The first weekend (3 and 4 July) features Johannesburg-based folk singers Tubatsi and Chosi, Afrikaans singer-songwriter Magé Troskie, blues-rock musician Cheyenne Hill, Mickey Struwick (Like the Mouse) and Freddy Lalendle (Ntu2ko).

The second weekend (31 July and 1 August) includes indigenous instrumentalist and singer Sky Dlala, Afrikaans poet-musician RFKI, South African-Peruvian singer Mano and other performers.

The third weekend (21 and 22 August) features renowned musician Lungiswa Plaatjies, folk duo Dead Dungarees, balladeer Maya Grey and additional artists. The full programme is available on the Spier website.

On the night

Dinner options are available at Veld Restaurant at the Spier Hotel before performances begin. As audiences move between venues throughout the evening, warm clothing and comfortable walking shoes are advisable.
